thanksgiving round 2

so today was supposed to be thanksgiving 2.0

this was the day ordained for christie and myself to go to her mothers home in irvine and eat some wellington and veggies. we were excited. i worked quite a bit today so i was supposed to meet christie at her mothers house around 3pm. Lisa (my mother in law) happens to own SATAN. well, his name is really nick and he is a 26 lb cat. If you don't know me too well, you may not know that i am soooo allergic to cats. Allegra and claratin and benadryl, and all that crud pretty much never work against my allergies so i decided to take some MANacin and just tough it out. I showed up around 2:30 and it wasn't far past 3:15 when my wife stepped in and said i should head home. My throat felt like it was closing, i couldn't take a deep breath for the life of me, i was coughing like a highschool student in volkswaggon bus "watching" other people smoke drugs for the first time. The cat for sure tried to kill me! I went to the doctor on the way home, received a shot in my arm, a shot in my tukkus, and a breathing treatment. In addition i received a good back of three different Rx's. I didn't even write this to tell you about that situation. What happened next made me want to rip my hair out (what's left of it).

I drove to walgreens in order to fill my Rx's and get home in bed to rest. I decided that i didn't want to do the drive thru thing, because i'm not that important, so i walked in. i walked up to find six (minimum) walgreens employees behind the counter. There was only one other guest in the store at the Rx counter so i figured i would be in and out. i stood there so politely for about 10 minutes before i started to wonder what the heck was going on. There were so many open registers and people kept looking at me. THe best was the girl standing like 16 inches in front of me at an open register staring at me. She didn't tell me to hold on. She didn't tell me she hated white people. She just simply would stare at me as she made phone calls. SHe was calling 95 year old ladies, one after the other, and telling them about their prescriptions they had clearly left at walgreens. SHe said time and time again, "hi mrs. _______(insert name from turn of the century) this is carolyn at walgreens in huntington beach. you seem to have forgotten to pick up your GERATOL and we are going to put it back if you don't pick it up soon, thanks and have a great day".

i was fuming inside. she wasn't doing anything important at all. she was basically telemarketing drugs while i continued my coughing fit. it took about 20 minutes total before a manager walked over, looked at me, looked at her, and said "hey, why don't you help the customer standing in front of you!"

oh well,

sometimes i think i'm invisible.

other times,

i KNOW i'm invisible.

So yesterday my buddy Mike and I were hanging out. Christie was doing his wife's hair. It was the night after a junior high laser tag all nighter so i was pretty spent to say the least. I was operating on about an hour and a half of sleep. (this holds no relevance to the story, but i still wanted to mention how tired i was). Mikey and I were leaving Fascist Island when we came across an awkward shape in the road. There, in the intersection of two busy streets lay an elderly man hunched over in a ball with his "scooter" about 10 feet away. We floored it, got out of the car, and rushed to the man's side. We didn't move him in order to keep his neck and back straight as hey lay on his side. The paramedics arrived within about 2 minutes of me calling them. He was awesome, he knew he was hurt, but he also knew he would be okay. He talked with the sweetest accent ever. I have no idea where it was from. When the paramedics showed up they took care of stuff and we took off.

We were at the scene no more than 10 minutes from start finish and two things bothered me SOOOO badly.

#1. Many people drove by the man without pulling over or stopping to make sure he was okay. I don't understand how messed up our society is to where it won't stop and assist our fellow citizens. People need to learn how to reach out. Not just how to reach out at church, but how to reach out to people in general.

#2. The few people that did pull over once we were on the scene simply wanted to stare. There were two groups of people around. First group of people just pulled over in their cars, rolled down their windows, and watched what was going on. LAME. The second group of people were the hovering & annoying people. There were about 6 middle-age women hovering over us, taking the nice gentlemen's air and free space. Even after i asked them to give him air they were going through his scooter and finding someone to contact and worry while they hovered all around him. So Lame!

I just don't get why people want to be a part of something so bad, but they aren't willing to actually DO something when it comes time.

anyways, I kinda just wanted to complain for a second.

Good news is, the old guy was for sure okay.

What kind of friend are you?

We can all "be" different friends, but when someone comes to you with a real problem which friend are you?

The Fixer

Are you the guy, or gal, that simply wants to fix everything when someone comes to you? Are the person that puts aside all reason and sane rational in order to try and make it all better? The fixer is often the person that you really want to see in order to feel better about yourself. You call the fixer when you have done something bad. So if you've killed a monkey on accident or kicked a child at the park just to deny it to their unbelieving mother, I suggest you call the fixer in your life.

The Ex-Friend

Are you the guy, or gal, that will say what needs to be said no matter what it will do to the person in need of advice? Are you the person that gives the "hard truth" no matter what is going to happen. The ex-friend is only called such because he/she is willing to risk their friendship with you in order to get their point across. After hanging up on your iPhone the ex-friend will often call you back to make you feel even worse about whatever it is you need advice on. I suggest you call the ex-friend if you want to have trouble sleeping at night, every night!

The Deer

Are you the friend that never has the right words to say? Are you the person that is never quite sure enough of yourself to be able to give advice in sticky situations? The deer is is often confused. They can be confused with "the listener" but there are large differences. The deer is the perfect person to text message, but the worst to see in person. Via text message you can often confuse their lack of response as "tough love" as opposed to the cluelessness that it really is. Go the deer's house to talk if you feel like you have a lot to get off your chest and don't want anyone to judge you, or even understand what you are saying...

The Mom

Are you the person that can give a friend "tough love" advice but always follow it up with making them cookies and/or telling the how special they are to you? If you struggle with sticking to your tough guns and always want to fix boo-boo's you may be the mom. People often call the mom when they are hungry.

Stranger Danger

Are you the friend that seems to be far too old or are far too young for your group of friends? Are you the person who is far too removed in any situation to give applicable advice to what these "crazy kids" are doing today? If so, you are the stranger danger. This character often wears "slugger tees", "baggy cargo pants", and/or an awesome moustache. People often seek advice from stranger danger when they want to get something off their chest and feel they can use trickery to avoid any negative criticism, because "stranger d" (as we like to call him) is still trying to figure out the difference between the jackson 5 and maroon 5.

Are you the person that always gives kind-hearted advice but you have the ability to offend every single person within a 60 foot radius while you're doing it? Do you have the care, heart, and wisdom to guide friends and family through very tough situations? Do you posses the mental fortitude and compassion to give brutally honest advice and skilled parenting while being able to wear 57 prints of different hawaiin shirts? If this is you, then you are the Randy Walker! Congratulations, you win.

I love my dad, He's the best. I love thinking back on much of the advice he has given me over the years. He always had the ability to give great advice without ever making it too awkward, thanks dad.

I think I'm gonna go hit up the gym right now and then possibly help christie baby sit tonight. Very few days left before Hawaii. Last night we went to "the counter" with my parents. It's a restaurant in Irvine. They make AMAZING vegan burgers. i suggest you give it a shot.

christie finally got her ring back today. they had to fix something on it. i was not a fan of her without a ring at all!!! so i guess we're married again.

life is good, it's real good. personally, i'm trying to slow down a little bit and enjoy everything that God is doing in my life. I don't want to miss a thing!

my dad is on a fishing trip i wish i was on.

but i have responsibilities here, so that's that.

christie and i leave in two weeks for hawaii (with my parents). we are really looking forward to this trip and how much fun it should be.

i got my foot tattoo (that was awful) covered up and finished. she looks great.

current inspiration: new tomlin album. if you don't have it, get it. steal it. buy it. i don't know, just get it. it's amazing. by the way if you steal it, you're prolly going to a special place for stealing a worship album. your call.

how busy you can think you are?

it's taken two amazing days outside of my "bubble" to realize how amazing my life is and how much better things really couldn't be.

First and foremost I serve the most amazing God ever.

Secondly, I have the most gorgeous, supportive, loving, and caring wife in the world.

In addition, I have a killer job doing what I love most and I have the coolest people in the world as a part of my life.

I went to the most amazing wedding EVER on Saturday Night. Brian and Brittany got married at the St. Regis, Monarch Beach and the festivities were amazing. I will have some pictures to come, but let's just say it will never be beat.

After church on Sunday Christie and I joined some of our closest friends for a rad couple days of pools, food, swimming, food, hanging out, food, and some food.

Sometimes just being around people who love you a lot is good for the soul. It's great to just kick it with loved ones. Between my family and all my close friends I have nothing more I could ask for.

Summer is coming to a close, maybe that means i will have more blogs in me? I am excited to get into work and try to make a difference. If you want something to pray for, Pray for our junior highers, they are facing decisions and temptations that most of us didn't face until our college years.

Kinda just blabbing about the stuff i always talk about, but I just wanted to try to hop back on my blogging train. I don't care who reads this stuff, or who does or does not comment on it, I just wanna get back to keeping a log of all the rad stuff that happens in my life.

i've kinda taken a nap from blogging.
but it's quite possible that i'm back.

some highlights from the last few weeks include:
Christie turning 26.
going to beachfest with a buncha really cool students.
having an amazing kickoff.
having a blast on sunday morning with our rad students.
going on a fishing trip with my dad over fathers day.
hanging out with my best friend and wife on fourth of july and getting our ride on.
hanging out with eva and jake before they left.
watching jake get his head buzzed in our living room.
spending quality time with my wife.
hanging out with my friend scott martin.
kicking it at the beach.
seeing my leaders help students grow.
getting destroyed by a huge desk.
having a cist removed from my neck.
spending some time in the ER.
short shorts.
swimming.
bike rides.

gosh, i know this sounds like bragging, but i'm not.
i've just really loved my summer so far.
i'll try to keep up with some of these updates so i don't fall off the blog face of the earth, but really, i don't know if that would be the worst thing in the world.

above all else, the main focus of my life right now is to simply try to worship my God in all that i do. i feel so truly blessed to have the job i do now. i feel like God is using me in a mighty way. I just feel lucky to be an agent of the Lord right now.

I pray that all of you reading this try to take a step back and realize how loving and amazing our God is. I talked last night with our jr high students about the sacrifice that God made when He gave His Son. Our students were humbled to really hear about the fact that God loved them enought to give His only Son's life. They loved it, they felt special and loved. It's a message that we all take for granted sometimes. Let's try to remember how great we all have it, no matter how rough life is at times.

I'm basically rambling, but that's okay, because i'm so simply stoked on everything in my life right now that words won't even really sum it up!

i'm pretty that my absence from the blogging community has not been life-shattering for anyone, but it's really true that i've just been super busy living life and loving it.

some highlights of the last two weeks include:

watching the laker game at my parent's house with deborah, mark, christie, my mom, and king randy (my loving dad).

going to kings fish house.

crying during two chick flicks yesterday.

alone time with my wife last night.

graduating the 8th graders.

bringing up new 6th graders for our impact bible study.

knowing that God is going to do amazing things in our youth group this summer.

having good talks with my friend scott.

getting to hang out with ansley more than i did when he was still in colorado.

watching curtis break stuff. haha.

hearing lexi say "hi tuna" a lot.

ikea breaking my life.

getting to attack k. goble and getting to plan with him, which i always enjoy.

being surrounded by amazing people with a heart to serve.

i'll probably post some pictures soon after this. my life is great.

i'm awake and traversing the innerweb right now before i get a shower and outfit change under my belt. Zeb awaits my presence at 24hr fitness. Haven't worked out with that fool in over a week and been eating like a depressed mother of 16. Should be fun.

Yesterday was amazing at church. Impact went really well and it was fun to spend some time with the kids. New guy is still killing it! Got some popsicles for seconds service because it was so blazing hot. There is something about Kenny Krenzin that simply endlessly funny. He does our game show with Luke. Kenny doesn't say much that is un-funny. He is like the uncola of monotony. Kenny, Thanks for your humor.

Today is filled with zebbing, getting ready, and beaching, then laker winning watching.

Looking forward to some tide pools and adventure time with my wife.

Movies with Deborah and Christie last night. That was really fun. Movie we saw was simply splendid. Tacone food was good. The girls thought there were like "holes" in our food. I still thought it was great. Many amazing dipping sauces to choose from for your sweet potato french fries!!!!

Ansley comes soon. Amazing.

Hanging out with Haley and Lexie as much as we do is cruel torture. They are both cute as a button and every moment we spend with them, every "i love you tuna" and every guilty smile, makes children seem that much more appealing. When we are blessed with kids it will be awesome. I know that we have fears about bringing children into this world, especially this early, but i know it will happen when it needs to happen. For now we will continue to hog all of each other's time and be on a continuous date which never has real dates in it. (Christie and I that is).

Anyways, i think this is turning into a nonsensical rant. But it feels good to get some WPM under your belt before you start your day.

speaking of that "sleeping beauty"... she just woke up and she's standing next to me looking real cute and barely awake. Time for music videos on the sofa.

so what have the last two days looked like you may ask...

let me break it down for ya.

nah... i'm over the moment by moment break down via blog.

i had a blast last night.

the people i hung out with were great.

my wife is often the life of the party, i really like that. it gives me a break.

day by day through all circumstances i have been falling more and more in love with my wife.

it is a true blessing to enjoy your spouse, nevertheless grow fonder of her every single day.

i'm stoked.

i have been kind of emotional over the last few weeks.

i don't really know what it is. but i have been crying during more movies.

crying during reading.

almost crying just because sometimes.

i've been sending a lot more text messages with the words "i love you" in them.

and the scary part is, i mean it.

i'm not scared. i am not afraid to invest in the friends and family i keep around me whom i love so much. it could be attributed to how much i've been reading in Paul letters to Corinth, or maybe i'm just so flippin' happy that i can't control myself.

last night i came to the realization that i couldn't imagine a dream job better than the one i currently have.

it was neat to think about how much i am loved where i work and how much i love all those i work with. from secretaries to co-workers to co-workers (who are bosses) it is just great. in a conversation i had last night i was able to express how lucky i feel to be surrounded by people who care about me. It is simply neat to know that there are tons of people who have my back both in life and in ministry.

i am blessed.

enough of the emo stuff...

today i read like 150 pages of a book.

all in all i was very happy i read the book.

only downfall is that i hate reading dialogue for the most part...

and this book was 97% conversations.

i also returned a pair of jeans i was totally not into and bought a pair of ray ban wayfarer sunglasses. i used to have a pair of 50 when i was a child and i'm very okay with being an owner of a pair all over again.

i also packed for staff retreat and did some work.

i feel ready to go on this retreat and to learn.

i'm gonna miss the crud out of my wife.

this is the longest we've been apart since we got married.

i love christie.

anyways.

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."

i love how the Bible tells us the message we have will be foolish to those around us who do not yet get it.

that's genius!

The message that we have for people is basically rubbish to their ears until they actually understand what we are speaking of.

There is a simple solution. We all need to live our lives in such a way that people want "whatever" we have. I know that i am simply re-inventing the wheel here. I know that this is not an original thought. But really, do we honestly take the time each and every day to remember that it is our ACTIONS by which we can earn many of our friends towards Christ?

The message we have may seem foolish and may make us seem outcast and "dorky", but who cares? I think the message we have is the coolest message to ever exist, and more importantly it is the only message to ever exist which has the power to save!

i've been having a great time

i've been having a great time lately.

i'm really digging the flow of things.

Christie and I just watched the Lakers game and my boys are making me very proud.

My Brother (Kobe) played a very great team game and Pau is back baby!

Look for Andrew to play next week and then look for the lakers to lock up the championship.

Lunch was great yesterday.

All those amazing doodes in one place was rad.

For the record, I really like Kurt.

Kurt and I were able to drive to lunch together and I really enjoy our talks.

I feel like Kurt is a guy who really has my best interest at heart and it is great to get pastoral advice from a guy who has been doing this for years.

Kurt, you shred, thanks man.

Totally looking forward to the CORE Bible study tomorrow night.

I got a chance to hang out with my friend Chris Bumcrot tonight at his birthday. Good to see some familiar faces and hang out with Ryan and his family too.

birthday party tonight.

the core was awesome on thursday.

we had like 12 new kids.

God is doing some amazing stuff in our ministry.

please be praying for our students and volunteers.

it is our hope and goal to impact these students lives in amazing ways.

it's easter tomorrow.

be praying for our church to impact our community's well being.

i pray we are able to do mighty things here in orange county.

it's our holiday tomorrow as christians. nobody else's.

it seems like lately we are both never in the office at the same time.

i finished my summer calendar today and it seems as if it will be an amazing and amazingly busy time.

i'm really looking forward to maui with my lovely wife.

tomorrow is my 24th birthday.

and the beauty of it is that i want NOTHING.

i've never been so content in my entire life.

God is so good.

My wife is the greatest ever and i love her to death.

i love my job.

my friends are rad.

my family is chill.

If you wanna get me something for my birthday, just take a few minutes and thank God for how dope your life is. That's my present.

this weekend was awesome.

camp was great.

the kids seemed to have a blast.

several kids wanna get baptized, and i could think of nothing cooler.

got to spend time with all sorts of rad people.

even kurt, who i really like, after he posted a blog about how bad i smelled the first night of camp.

first time away from the wife, and boy did i ever miss her.

i love christie a poop-ton and i missed sleeping next to my best friend.

it feels great to be back home with my sweet little wifey.

tomorrow should be rad.

gonna pick up my car that is having my old "system" put in it.

gonna take christie to the dentist (which she is not stoked on).

go see zeb.

get a sweet lunch.

put the MAN in manicure.

and the pee in pedicure?

and clean our home.

on a side not, i feel so blessed to be aloud to lead the life that i am.

life is great.

last night we had our Core junior high bible study.

the kids seemed to have an amazing time. it seemed like there were millions.

the worship went great and the kids really got undignified. We played trash can "can can" and had a blast.

I introduced the idea of heroes and a cycle system in the book of Judges and i even think some of the kids understood it.

after church my wife and i came home and watched the end of lakers game and then the new lost.

i am either way too smart or way too stupid because this was not my favorite lost episode so far.

so christie has a new hobby idea. if anyone needs birthday ideas for christie i got ya covered. she found a website called sublimestitching . it seems super cute.

this is an example of one of the pattern sets.

we are also really enjoying our new iMac at home. we bought the lowest end computer which is more than enough for us. it is really cute seeing christie smile and bounce her head around while she plays on the computer. i'm easily amused, get over it.

today i woke up and went to HCS to speak at their chapel and it was pretty fun. I told the kids to make their faith their own. I informed them that they cannot rely on the faith of their teachers and their parents. They need to have their OWN relationship with Jesus.

alright, back to work.

this guy seems to know his stuff.

last night christie and i ate dinner with my mom and Lou's BBQ, it was great.

Then we visited our friend Lindsay at his place of work.

Then we came home.

I started to kind of fool around with making a new website for ilikechurch.com but realized i would stay up all night if i continued to work on it.

After drifting away into computer world, Christie and I watched most of "fever pitch" which seemed pretty cool.

well,

back to the large amount of work i left myself to do this week/next week.

well, it has been a few months since i've posted in this blog.
i am pretty sure i created this blog and let it sit so i could think if this was really something i wanted to keep up with.
and after letting it sit for a few months that answer is, "yes".
i plan to post to this blog and if anyone feels that they would like to check up on me.
more power to you.

my life is in a stage where everything seems to be getting greater every single day.
i love the people i work with.
i love my job.
i love my ministry.
i love my wife.
i love my God.
i love my friends(which i am realizing are fewer and fewer by the day, and it's great).

i am altogether pumped on life.

more to come, and most likely less gloating about how great my life is and more posts about the mundane aspects of a 23 year old youth pastor who is in love with God and his wife.

i am so lucky to live the life that i do.
every single night is a sleepover with my best friend.
i enjoy waking up early, going and hitting a few golf balls, and having alone time to think about things.
i enjoy going to work.
i love my job.
i love my wife.
i love my friends.

i am so blessed.

i even enjoy walking around the office and having conversations with friends about "once saved always saved" and open theism.

today is thursday which means that it's the big day for junior high.
i really look forward to seeing all the junior high students and i pray that our leaders will be able to touch their lives and bring them into true discipleship of the Lord.

that's when i woke up this morning while my wife got ready for work.
while i layed in bed i really enjoyed my reading of the night before from Dietrick Bonhoeffer's famous work "the cost of discipleship".
i love how he talks about costly grace and how this world has truly bought into cheap grace and the lies that it holds.
if we are going to be a true christian church we must recognize that grace is the sum of a total and not simply a gift which allows us to sin.
when luther said "sin boldly..." he didn't mean what we have turned it into.

today is going to be a great day.
